First FEAST Summer School: Interdisciplinary Impulses for Food System Transformation

Ludwigsburg, September 2025 – From September 1 to 4, the first FEAST Summer School took place in Ludwigsburg. Students and young professionals from across Europe came together to engage intensively with the transformation of food systems. Four days of lectures, practical activities, and interactive methods highlighted the complexity of the challenges in the food sector – and the importance of interdisciplinary approaches for developing sustainable solutions.

A special focus was placed on the regional context: Participants analyzed the food environment in Ludwigsburg’s city center to identify challenges and opportunities for a more sustainable system. They also worked with agricultural data to test new cultivation strategies and explore scenarios that could strengthen local food security.

Day three focused on policy and governance, with case studies and a poster session that sparked lively exchange. On day four, the spotlight shifted to education and Open Educational Resources (OERs): three working groups developed innovative OER materials using a serious game approach. These groups will continue to work on their materials beyond the event, aiming to make them accessible to teachers across Europe.

The Summer School clearly demonstrated that food system transformation is only possible through learning, sharing, and acting together. The interdisciplinary collaboration not only generated new ideas but also laid a strong foundation for future cooperation.

And there is more to come: Next year, two additional FEAST Summer Schools will take place, continuing to advance the topic both regionally and at the European level.
