FEAST Third Hackathon in a Row
In the Kaunas edition of Hack for Food, Hack For Good, OpenDot, in cooperation with Kaunas University of Technology, VIVITA Lithuania, the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, and Design Friends, aimed to help children and their families/caregivers to lead a better lifestyle and eat healthier. The hackathon focused on the real-life challenges faced by children diagnosed with type I diabetes, as revealed by the needs assessment conducted in cooperation with Kaunas University of Technology and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences.
In collaboration with Vivita Lithuania, OpenDot worked with children aged 10 to 14 from Herojus and other Kaunas schools to develop new concepts and solutions that promote the adoption of a healthier lifestyle through an educational approach.
During the hackathon, the following challenges were identified and addressed:
- How can we support children with diabetes to lead healthier and happier lives?
- How can we promote healthy diet education and prevention through food?
After the hackathon, students, makers, and designers from the Kaunas University of Technology will develop and prototype the winning solutions in a two-month mentorship programme run by OpenDot in collaboration with the Kaunas University of Technology and Design Friends.
The event!
The Kaunas hackathon was a two-day event featuring 22 children as participants. This dynamic two-day hackathon brought together children, educators, and specialists in an energetic, collaborative marathon. Supported by the creative minds of OpenDot designers and makers, Vivita mentors, and experts from the Kaunas University of Technology, participants engaged in a truly inspiring experience.
On the first day, teams were formed, including children from Herojus school and the Kaunas University of Technology students, who joined forces to identify challenges and brainstorm innovative ideas through team-building activities. Each group then concluded the day with a focused main idea. On the second day, these groups transformed their ideas into prototypes and showcased their creative solutions, marking an impressive display of teamwork and innovativeness.
The winning teams!
Congratulations to our incredible young innovators!
- Food Box - “Sugar Help”
The “Sugar Help” box wants to solve two main needs: the first is that the diabetic kids have to eat or drink as soon as the level of sugar level goes down; than, the food box can help in case of misinformation at school: sometimes the other kids or the adults, as teacher, don’t know what to do or act, so they complain if the diabetic kid has to eat or drink during class. The box can be hung on the wall at school: it contains “good food” to tackle the immediate need of sugar, organized in right portions to know exactly how much sugar you get with it. The box should also help the other people to understand this problem and the consequences of diabetes in terms of behavior and needs.
- Water Bottle
The idea is to hack a water bottle to have more functions and permit people with diabetes to have an all-in-one solution. The bottle is redesigned to have three different parts: an "regular" only water section; a juice section (in case you have to drink sugar); an insulin-pump section.
