Hack For Food, Hack For Good – Berlin, Germany

Our Berlin Edition is here!

Our Berlin edition of Hack for Food, Hack for Good hackathon series was organized by OpenDot - the innovation hub for social impact based in Milan - in collaboration with the Berlin Community Garden Programme of the Berlin Department for Urban Mobility, Transport, Climate Action and the Environment. The hackathon aimed at supporting the urban garden system in the city and welcomed local gardeners professionals, designers, makers, service or UX designers, developers, communication experts, creatives, and students, who wanted to contribute to supporting urban gardening communities in Berlin and promote the adoption of a healthier lifestyle.

The hackathon brought together international and local partners to develop co-designed tools, innovative tech solutions, and approaches that can generate positive change to improve health and promote the adoption of a healthier lifestyle.

After the two sessions of need finding with representatives of the advisory board of the community gardening programme and gardeners, a series of challenges were defined:

  • How can we develop a structured, systematic, engaging, and collaborative onboarding plan for new urban gardeners?
  • How can we effectively help the community to share skills and create an internal common knowledge?
  • How can we help urban gardens to best communicate their values and activities?
  • How can we transform urban gardens into public spaces inclusive for everyone?

The event!

The hackathon was a two-day event where participants came together to form multidisciplinary teams. On Day 1, participants engaged in a dynamic series of activities designed to foster collaboration and kickstart innovation. The day began with a challenges presentation and teambuilding sessions, followed by an introduction to the co-design methodology, ensuring all teams were equipped with a shared understanding of the process. Teams then dived into brainstorming in response to finding creative solutions for introduced challenges, with guidance and insights provided by mentors and experts.

Day 2 was focused on bringing ideas to life and showcasing the results of collaborative efforts. Teams dived into group work, completing their prototypes and finalizing the details of their presentations. The hackathon concluded with the final presentations, where each group shared their innovative solutions, demonstrating the creativity, effort, and teamwork invested over the course of the program.

Berlin winning concept

And the Winner is ...

The KiezGarden Wheel

The innovative concept, The KiezGarden Wheel, stood out as a solution to bridge communication gaps within community gardens. This digital planner will be developed to enhance knowledge sharing, streamline planning, and foster a sense of connection among community gardens, both internally and externally. The concept will be developed further under the mentorship of OpenDot.

Kudos to the team: Paige Postma, Dishunee Pandya, Niklas Michels (thank you for the great illustration), and Minette Mangahas!
