Everyday Choices Matter
Every day, we make countless food decisions—what to buy, cook, or eat. These choices may seem small, but they shape our health, the environment, and contribute to the fairness of the food system. Understanding why people eat the way they do is key to healthier, more sustainable diets.
A Food System That Needs Change
Across Europe, the current food system often benefits large corporations while the environment, public health governments , and smaller businesses like farmers and local shops struggle. It contributes to climate change, biodiversity loss, resource overuse, and preventable diseases. But real change begins with individual behaviours.
Exploring European Eating Habits
The FEAST project studied food behaviours across 27 European countries. It looked at which foods are over- or under-consumed, what motivates healthier choices, and the barriers that prevent them. People’s habits may be influenced by culture, personal taste, income, access to food, and the information they see.

Barriers and Motivators
Cost, convenience, availability, cultural habits, and taste preferences all shape what we eat. How information about food spreads—from media to social networks —also impacts choices. Understanding these factors allows us to support better individual decisions.
Geographical Differences and Access
Mapping food patterns reveals clear regional differences. Some areas have strong adherence to healthy diets, while others face limited access to nutritious options, especially for vulnerable populations. These insights help design targeted initiatives rather than one-size-fits-all solutions.
Small Changes, Big Impact
Even small shifts in daily behaviour—choosing more plant-based foods, eating locally produced items, or reducing meat —can collectively reduce environmental pressures and lower disease risks. Support from communities, businesses, and policymakers is key.
Why Individual Choices Matter
Food systems are shaped by everyday decisions. By understanding what drives individual behaviours, FEAST seeks to make healthier, sustainable diets easier to follow. Together, we can transform a “Lose-Lose-Lose-Win” scenario into a “Win-Win-Win-Win” for people, the planet, and communities alike. Stay Tuned!
Every choice counts! This is just the beginning. In the coming weeks, we’ll share a series of blogs from FEAST exploring what Europeans eat and how we can collectively shape better food systems. Stay tuned—you won’t want to miss it!
